A talk by Tim Lawson on the geological structure and evolutionary timeline of Quinag, near Loch Assynt.
The Y-shaped ridge of Quinag has been hewn from the local bedrock by many erosional processes over millions of years. Tim Lawson will explore this evolution, with particular attention to the effects of various phases of glaciation. Clues as to former ice-flow direction and glacial processes will be explored, and the mountain’s present-day geomorphology will be discussed.
Tim Lawson did his PhD on the Quaternary Geomorphology of the Assynt Area, NW Scotland between 1978 and 1983. He has published many academic papers based on this and subsequent research in the area, and has led a number of field excursions to different parts over the years.
