To follow the North West Highlands Geopark Ltd Annual General Meeting
“Geoparks depend on careful assessment and justification of their geological importance at both regional and international scale, and Mike Benton will talk about these themes. The scientific justification has been core to assumptions behind conservation in the UK since 1949, and this allows educationists, but also lawyers, to be clear about why a particular site has to be conserved – a claim can be made, such as ’This site is the internationally recognised location for the Ordovician-Silurian boundary’ or ’This site yielded the oldest non-marine Precambrian fossils in the world’. Care is needed before making such statements, but we have the background data to do this in the UK.”
