Interactive Exhibition @ The Rock Stop
We are very excited to be installing an Augmented Reality Sandbox at our visitor center for the coming 2016 season. The sandbox is available for members of the public to ‘have a go’ with and will help children and young people understand topography and hydrodynamic systems.
The system relies on a relatively cheap Microsoft X-box Kinect sensor to feedback the topography of sand in a box which lies beneath it. Software is currently available to simulate rainfall or volcanism and fluid flow across the sandbox topography, projecting a moving colour overlay. In the future we plan to initiate an MSc research project to investigate how this system might be used to simulate glaciation or other earth kinematics which could similarly be deployed to the NWH Visitor centre!
